President TRUMP has escalated trade tensions by imposing a 30% tariff on the European Union and Mexico, following earlier tariffs targeting Japan, South Korea, Canada, and Brazil. A separate 50% tariff was also levied on imported copper. The move comes as the EU sought a comprehensive trade agreement with the U.S., now facing a new barrier.

In a letter to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Trump accused the EU of decades of "non-reciprocal trade practices" and "anti-American policies." He cited trade deficits and restricted market access for U.S. goods as justification, warning of potential further hikes if the EU retaliates. "If you decide your Tariffs and retaliate, then whatever number you choose to raise by, will be added onto the 30% that we charge," Trump wrote.

The U.S. administration framed the tariffs as a matter of national security, arguing that European protectionism has exploited American market openness. The EU now faces a critical decision—whether to negotiate or respond with countermeasures, risking a full-blown trade war.
